Carrières des Lumières

Directions

Just outside Les Baux-de-Provence, the Carrières de Lumières transforms former limestone quarries into one of the most unique art experiences in France.

Inside vast underground chambers, famous paintings are projected onto walls, floors, and ceilings, surrounding you. The visuals shift constantly, moving from full compositions to enlarged details, all set to music that echoes through the space.

Each year focuses on a different artist or artistic movement, but the concept remains the same: you walk freely through a living, moving exhibition, where color, light, and sound blend into a fully immersive experience.

The setting adds to the atmosphere. These quarries lie in the dramatic Val d’Enfer, a landscape of twisted rock formations that has inspired artists and filmmakers for decades.

👉 Local Tip: Arrive early or later in the day to avoid peak crowds. Once inside, walk all the way to the far rooms. Most visitors stay near the entrance, but the deeper chambers feel quieter and far more immersive.
