Directions

Place de l’Horloge is the main square of Avignon and the heart of daily life inside the city walls. Built on the site of the ancient Roman forum, it remains the city’s central meeting point, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and historic landmarks.

The square is framed by the Hôtel de Ville (town hall) and its clock tower, as well as the Opéra Grand Avignon, giving it both administrative and cultural importance. Throughout the day, terraces fill with locals and visitors, creating a lively atmosphere that reflects the rhythm of the city.

Look closely at the surrounding streets, especially rue de Mons, rue Molière, and rue Corneille, where painted windows feature historical figures linked to Avignon’s past. These subtle details are often missed but add character to the area.

On quieter Sunday mornings, you can still hear the bells from nearby churches echoing across the square, offering a rare glimpse of Avignon’s older soundscape.

👉 Local Tip: Don’t eat directly on the square unless you’re just stopping for a drink. Walk a few streets away for better food and more local prices.
