Located at the end of Quai Ganteaume in a former 19th-century town hall, the Musée Ciotaden explores the history of La Ciotat from its ancient origins to modern times.

Spread across several rooms, the museum traces the town’s development from its foundation by Greek settlers from Marseille to its rise as a major shipbuilding center. Exhibits include historical objects, documents, and models that bring this industrial and maritime past to life.

A dedicated section focuses on La Ciotat’s role in the birth of cinema, highlighting the work of the Lumière brothers, who filmed some of the earliest moving images here.

There are also more unexpected displays, including one on pétanque, reflecting the importance of local traditions in everyday life.

It’s a modest museum, but it adds useful context if you want to understand how La Ciotat evolved beyond its beaches and harbor.

👉 Local Tip: Pair this with a walk along the old port and a visit to the Eden Theatre. Together, they give a much clearer picture of the town’s history.
