Mount Parnitha National Park is the largest protected natural area in Attica and one of the most important national parks in Greece. Located on the highest mountain in the region, Mount Parnitha rises to 1,413 meters and offers a dense forest landscape of pine and fir, home to red deer, foxes, wild boars, and over 130 bird species. The park is crisscrossed by marked hiking and mountain biking trails, and also features caves, springs, ancient fortresses, and two refuges: Mpafi and Flampouri. It’s a year-round destination for nature lovers, hikers, and Athenians seeking a break from the city.

The park is situated in North Athens, roughly 30 kilometers from the city center by road, near the suburbs of Acharnes and Marousi. It spans about 250 square kilometers, covering much of the Parnitha mountain range.

Mount Parnitha National Park is open all year, 24 hours a day. The network of trails remains accessible in all seasons, and both the Mpafi and Flampouri mountain refuges operate year-round. Each refuge offers food, rest stops, and overnight accommodations. Snow is common in winter, particularly at higher altitudes.

To reach Mount Parnitha by public transport, take Metro Line 1 to Marousi Station. From there, transfer to a local bus (Line 714) toward the Parnitha cable car or the base of the refuge routes. Alternatively, you can drive via Attiki Odos, following signs toward the Mont Parnes Casino or Filis Avenue. Several trailheads begin near parking areas.

Entry to Mount Parnitha National Park is free. There is no fee to hike or access the natural areas. Optional services, including the cable car to Mont Parnes Casino, cost approximately €10 to €15 round trip. Meals and overnight stays at the refuges are priced separately, and guided hikes with certified mountain leaders can range from €30 to over €200 depending on the length and group size.
