Chateau de Grimaud

Directions

You don’t visit this place for perfect walls. You come for the feeling of standing where power once ruled the entire valley.

Château de Grimaud, perched above the village of Grimaud, dates back to at least the 11th century and once controlled the whole Freinet territory, including what is now Saint-Tropez. Built on a rocky peak with natural defenses, it gave its rulers a clear advantage over the surrounding plains.

What you see today are restored ruins, but they still tell the story. The donjon remains, sections of walls, and the layout reveal how the fortress expanded over centuries, especially under the Castellane family, who turned it into a residence for receptions rather than pure defense.

The castle didn’t fall in battle. It was dismantled after the French Revolution, its stones reused elsewhere. That explains the fragmented look today, but also gives it that raw, open-air atmosphere that works surprisingly well.

Now, the site doubles as a cultural venue, hosting open-air performances like the Grimaldines festival, where music and history collide under the night sky.

👉 Local Tip: Go late in the day. The light over the Gulf of Saint-Tropez from the ruins is far better than midday, and most visitors leave before sunset.
