Dominating the rocky ridge above Les Baux-de-Provence, the Château des Baux is one of the most impressive fortress sites in Provence. Despite the name, this is not a traditional château but a vast medieval citadel, carved directly into the limestone plateau.

Accessed from the end of the village, the site opens onto a large exposed area where replica siege engines and catapults bring medieval warfare to life, especially during summer demonstrations. From there, paths lead through the ruins of towers, chapels, and defensive walls, including the remains of the feudal castle destroyed in the 17th century.

As you climb higher, the views expand across the Alpilles, olive groves, and the plains stretching toward the Camargue. The combination of raw stone, open sky, and sweeping panoramas makes this one of the most striking viewpoints in the region.

👉 Local Tip: Most visitors stop near the entrance. Walk all the way to the far edges of the citadel for quieter corners and the best panoramic views over the Alpilles.
