A single stone arch leads you across the river, straight into the quieter side of the village. It feels simple at first glance, yet it holds one of the last visible traces of Correns’ defensive past.

The Porte Saint-Germain, located in Correns in the Var, dates back to the 14th century and is the last remaining gate of the village’s medieval fortifications. It once controlled access to the settlement, marking the boundary between the protected center and the surrounding countryside.

Today, the gate connects to a small stone bridge crossing the river toward the left bank, in the direction of Châteauvert. This transition between village and landscape gives the spot a subtle charm, especially when you slow down and take in the setting.

Local tradition links the gate to Saint Germain, said to have passed through here after returning from Rome, later becoming the patron saint of the village.
