Chateau d'Hyères

Directions

You feel the climb before you see the reward. Then the view opens, and suddenly everything below makes sense.

Château d’Hyères sits at 198 meters above the town, on the hill of Castéou, where it has watched over the coast since the 11th century. Built by the Lords of Fos, it became one of the largest feudal fortresses in Provence, controlling both land routes and access to the sea.

The ruins still reveal how strategic this place was. You can trace the layout of defensive walls, gates, a donjon, and a protected well, all designed to withstand long sieges. Even the angled entrance shows how seriously defense was taken.

History here runs deep. Saint Louis stayed at the castle after returning from the Crusades. Later, it became a contested stronghold during wars and power struggles, until it was finally dismantled in the 17th century on royal orders.

Today, what remains is raw and open. The stone walls frame some of the best views over Hyères, the coastline, and the surrounding hills, turning the visit into both a historical stop and a scenic reward.

👉 Local Tip: Take the uphill route through the old town instead of driving. The gradual climb builds anticipation and gives you multiple viewpoints before you even reach the top.
