The Musée d’histoire de Toulon et de sa région, or Musée du Vieux Toulon, is a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the history and heritage of Toulon. Located on Cours Lafayette, one of the liveliest streets in the old town, the museum offers a glimpse into the city’s past through historical artifacts, documents, and artworks.

One of the most intriguing themes explored here is the role of young Napoleon Bonaparte in the defence of Toulon during the siege of 1793, a key moment that helped launch his military career.

The collection also includes historic weapons, naval memorabilia, and sketches by the renowned Provençal sculptor Pierre Puget, whose works reflect the artistic traditions of the region.

Although modest in size, the museum provides a rich overview of Toulon’s maritime, military, and cultural history, making it a rewarding stop when exploring the surrounding markets, harbor, and historic streets of the old town.

👉 Local tip: Visit the museum after exploring the Cours Lafayette market, one of the most authentic food markets in Toulon, located just outside the museum entrance.
