Located in the quartier Vienot just outside Aubagne, the Musée de la Légion Étrangère sits within the headquarters of the French Foreign Legion, offering a rare insight into one of France’s most iconic military institutions.

The museum traces the Legion’s history from its creation in 1831 to modern-day operations, with exhibits covering campaigns across North Africa, Mexico, and Indochina. The visit begins in the Salle d’Honneur, a quiet and solemn space dedicated to fallen legionnaires, before continuing through chronological displays of uniforms, weapons, and personal objects.

Among the highlights are the famous white képis, along with archival material and references to the Legion’s presence in cinema and literature. The museum also touches on its origins under King Louis-Philippe and its long association with Algeria before relocating to Aubagne in 1962.

Set slightly away from the town center, this is not a casual stop, but it’s a worthwhile visit if you’re interested in military history or French heritage beyond the usual tourist themes.

👉 Combine this visit with Aubagne’s center or nearby hills, as the museum is located across the A50 and not easily reached on foot. Check opening days in advance, as access can be limited.
