The Musée Marc Chagall in Nice houses the largest public collection of works by Marc Chagall, making it one of the most important art museums in Provence. Opened in 1972, the museum was created specifically to showcase the artist’s monumental Biblical Message series, a group of 17 large canvases inspired by themes from the Old Testament.

These powerful paintings are the heart of the collection, including several versions of The Song of Songs, where Chagall’s vibrant colours and dreamlike symbolism express themes of spirituality, love, and faith.

The museum also displays a wide range of additional works donated by the artist, including oil paintings, sketches, pastels, and gouaches. Chagall contributed directly to the design of the museum as well, creating three stained-glass windows representing the Creation of the World, a large mosaic depicting the Prophet Elijah, and a tapestry designed specifically for the space.

Set in peaceful gardens on a hillside above Nice, the museum provides a calm environment that complements the contemplative character of Chagall’s work.

👉 Local tip: After visiting the galleries, spend a few minutes in the garden outside the museum, where the reflections of Chagall’s mosaic in the pool create one of the most serene spots in Nice.
