Noor-e-Islam Mosque holds the distinction of being the oldest mosque in all of France, built in 1905. Located near the Grand Marché in Saint-Denis, its clean white minaret and green-tiled roof stand out amid the surrounding Creole buildings and colonial architecture. While the mosque is not open to tourists outside of specific events, it remains a quiet and respected presence in the capital.

The mosque serves the island’s Sunni Muslim community, most of whom are descendants of Indian and Comorian migrants. Daily prayers are held here, and Friday prayers fill the courtyard and surrounding pavement with shoes lined up neatly along the edge. The street-facing side often features fresh paint and carefully maintained tilework, a sign of the deep care the community has for this space.

👉 If you're curious to learn more, visit during the Journées du Patrimoine in September. The mosque occasionally opens its doors to visitors and explains its history in a welcoming setting.
