Monastère de Cimiez
CulturePark
Directions

You leave the busy center of Nice and climb toward Cimiez. Everything slows down. The noise fades, the air shifts, and this monastery feels like a reset button.

The Monastère de Cimiez stands on a site with over a thousand years of history. The first chapel dates back to the early 11th century, later expanded by Franciscan monks who shaped the complex you see today. It remains an active religious site, not just a historical monument.

The setting does half the work. Gardens open wide over the city, with quiet paths, shaded corners, and one of the best panoramic views in Nice. Locals come here to walk, read, or simply breathe.

Step inside the church and the focus shifts again. The Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption holds three important works by Louis Bréa, one of the most significant painters in the region. These pieces span decades of his work and give the church real artistic weight.

Then there’s the cemetery. Simple, calm, and overlooking the city, it holds the graves of figures like Henri Matisse and adds another layer to the atmosphere. This is not a place for rushed visits.

Cimiez itself feels different from the rest of Nice. Wider streets, quieter surroundings, and a more local rhythm. The monastery anchors that feeling.

👉 Local Tip: Combine this with the nearby Roman ruins and Matisse Museum for a half-day in Cimiez. Most visitors stay by the sea. This area shows a completely different side of Nice.
