The Holy Monastery of Rousanos, dedicated to Saint Barbara, is one of the most photogenic of all the Meteora monasteries. Perched on a narrow rock pillar, it is smaller than the Great Meteoron or Varlaam, but its intimate scale and beautiful surroundings make it a favorite for visitors. Originally built in the 16th century, it has been a nunnery since 1988, and its peaceful atmosphere reflects this transition.

Inside, you’ll find the katholikon decorated with stunning 16th‑century frescoes, along with a well‑maintained courtyard filled with flowers that contrast beautifully with the rugged rock landscape. The monastery’s position also makes it one of the best spots for panoramic photos of the surrounding Meteora pillars, particularly at sunrise or late afternoon.

👉 Time your visit for mid‑afternoon when the sunlight hits the rock face and enhances the warm tones of the monastery’s walls. Ideal for photography.
