Fort de Brégançon

Directions

White walls, sea views, and a dramatic rock setting give this place instant presence. It feels both strategic and cinematic, with the Mediterranean stretching out toward the Îles d’Hyères.

Set above Cabasson in Bormes-les-Mimosas, Fort de Brégançon rises on a rocky outcrop about 35 meters above the sea and has watched over this stretch of the Var coast for centuries. The site began as an early fortified position, took on its current island-fort role in the late 15th century, and later became the official presidential retreat of the French Republic in 1968. It is also protected as a historic monument and a classified natural site.

What makes it special is the mix of layers in one visit: medieval military history, state power, and one of the most striking coastal panoramas in southern France. From here, the views open onto the Mediterranean, Porquerolles, Port-Cros, and the coastline around Cap Bénat, which is one reason this spot leaves such a strong impression.

👉 Local Tip: Pair this with Plage de Cabasson and arrive early for softer light on the fort and calmer views across the water. The silhouette is especially photogenic from the beach and nearby coastal paths.
