The Massif de l’Esterel is one of the most striking natural landscapes on the Côte d’Azur, where rugged red volcanic mountains plunge directly into the blue Mediterranean. Stretching between Saint-Raphaël and Cannes, the massif creates a spectacular contrast of cliffs, forests, and hidden coves along the coastline.

Although the peaks rise to just over 600 metres, the Esterel’s dramatic scenery of gorges, mountain passes, and rocky summits makes it feel far wilder than its modest altitude suggests. The distinctive red porphyry rock gives the mountains their intense colour, especially at sunrise and sunset.

The coastal road from Saint-Raphaël to Théoule-sur-Mer is one of the most scenic drives on the Riviera, twisting along cliffs with constant views over the Mediterranean. Inland, numerous trails lead through pine forests and maquis-covered slopes.

One of the best hikes is the route from Pont de l’Esterel to Mont Vinaigre, the highest point in the massif, which offers sweeping views stretching from the Alps to the Massif des Maures. Other popular trails climb to Pic du Cap Roux or Pic de l’Ours, both rewarding hikers with spectacular coastal panoramas.

With its wild landscapes and striking colours, the Massif de l’Esterel is one of the most beautiful natural areas on the French Riviera.

👉 Local tip: Stop along the coastal road between Saint-Raphaël and Agay. Several small parking areas allow you to walk down to quiet coves where the red cliffs meet the turquoise Mediterranean, one of the most photogenic spots on the Riviera.
