Castle of Vins-sur-Caramy

The Château de Vins-sur-Caramy is a striking historic castle overlooking the peaceful Caramy River in the village of Vins-sur-Caramy in the Var. Flanked by four towers, the château dominates a postcard-perfect landscape where the river winds beneath the famous “Roman” bridge... which, despite its name, actually dates from the Middle Ages.

Listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments, the castle was built in the 16th century, at a time when fortified medieval structures were evolving into more refined Renaissance residences. Inside the fortified walls, the cour d’honneur reveals a beautiful two-level Italian-style gallery with double arcades, once used to access the castle’s apartments.

The southern façade opens onto panoramic views of the Caramy valley, while inside you’ll discover elegant rooms including a historic library containing medieval music scores and a large reception hall that was once the castle’s stables.

When the current owners purchased the château in 1959, it was almost in ruins. Over the following 50 years, they carefully restored the property, a remarkable story documented in an exhibition on site.

Today, the castle serves as both a guesthouse and cultural venue, hosting unusual summer visits such as escape games inspired by Renaissance alchemist Blaise de Vigenère, treasure hunts, and atmospheric candlelit tours.

👉 Local tip: Walk down to the stone bridge over the Caramy River after your visit. From there, you get the best view of the château rising above the valley, especially in the late afternoon light.
