Arènes de Fréjus

Directions

The Arènes de Fréjus are one of the most important Roman monuments in the Var, dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD when the city was known as Forum Julii, a major Roman port on the Mediterranean.

Built to host public spectacles, the amphitheatre could accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. Like other Roman arenas across Provence, it was used for large gatherings and entertainment in antiquity.

For many years, the structure stood as a picturesque ruin, with large sections of the seating terraces and arena still visible among the weathered stone. The writer Victor Hugo was among those who admired the dramatic remains.

In recent decades, the amphitheatre has been restored and adapted as a cultural venue, allowing it to host modern events such as concerts, performances, and traditional bullfights. The restoration includes protective concrete structures designed to preserve the ancient sandstone beneath.

Today, the Arènes de Fréjus remain a striking reminder of the city’s Roman heritage, while continuing to serve as a gathering place for large events just as they did nearly two thousand years ago.

👉 Local tip: Check the summer event calendar. Watching a concert or performance inside the Roman amphitheatre creates a memorable experience in a historic setting.
