Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe in Orange is one of the most impressive Roman monuments in southern France, built in the early 1st century to celebrate Roman victories over the Gauls.

Located just outside the historic center, this triple-arched structure is richly decorated with intricate reliefs depicting military and maritime power. On one side, chained Gallic prisoners clearly illustrate Roman dominance, while carvings of anchors and ropes highlight control over trade and the sea.

Despite its age, the arch has survived remarkably well. In the 17th century, when parts of Orange were fortified, it was incorporated into the defensive walls rather than dismantled, which helped preserve it.

While smaller than the nearby theatre, the arch is equally significant and offers a striking example of Roman propaganda carved in stone.

👉 Local Tip: Don’t just pass by for a quick photo. Walk around the entire monument to see the different reliefs. The details are easy to miss from a distance but are what make the arch special.
