The Abbaye de Saint-Gilles, located in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, is one of the most important Romanesque religious monuments in Provence. Although much of the original medieval complex was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1562, its most impressive feature remains intact: the west façade.

This richly carved façade is considered one of the finest in southern France. It depicts detailed biblical scenes, including one of the earliest known sculpted representations of the Passion of Christ, dating from the late 12th century.

The abbey was founded under Raymond VI of Toulouse and became a major stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. It also served as the first European priory of the Knights of St John, giving it both religious and historical significance.

Below the church, the crypt houses the tomb of Saint Gilles, a hermit who, according to tradition, arrived here from Greece. The site combines architectural beauty with a deep sense of history, even in its partially ruined state.
