The Vallée de la Vésubie is one of the most beautiful and varied valleys near Nice, where the landscape quickly shifts from Mediterranean hills to alpine scenery with forests, waterfalls, and rugged peaks.

Formed by the meeting of the Madone de Fenestre and Boréon streams at Saint-Martin-Vésubie, the river flows through pine forests, meadows, and narrow gorges before joining the Var north of Nice. Along the way, you’ll find a series of quiet villages, scenic viewpoints, and access points to the Mercantour National Park.

One of the highlights is the Gorges de la Vésubie, where the river cuts through deep canyon walls of strikingly colored rock. Higher up the valley, around Saint-Martin-Vésubie, the atmosphere becomes fully alpine, with hiking trails leading to lakes, waterfalls, and mountain peaks near the Italian border.

The valley also has cultural touches, including historic churches and the pilgrimage route to the Madone de Fenestre, set in a dramatic mountain landscape.

Less crowded than the coast, this is one of the best areas to experience nature, cooler temperatures, and a slower pace while staying within easy reach of the Côte d’Azur.

👉 Local Tip: Stop at la Madone d’Utelle for one of the best panoramic views over the valley. It’s one of the rare spots where you can actually appreciate the scale of the gorges.
