Lac de Saint-Cassien is a large freshwater lake located between Tanneron, Montauroux, and the Esterel hills, offering one of the most peaceful natural landscapes in eastern Var. The lake was created between 1965 and 1966 after the construction of a gravity dam on the Siagne River.

Today, the reservoir plays an important role as both a water supply and a biodiversity reserve, supporting a wide range of wildlife and Mediterranean plant species. The surrounding hills and forests create a quiet environment that contrasts with the busy Riviera coastline just a short drive away.

The lake is also a popular destination for outdoor activities. Visitors come here to enjoy walking trails, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and fishing, while the surrounding viewpoints offer beautiful scenery across the water and the surrounding hills.

One particularly nice viewpoint can be found near the hamlet of Marjoris, where you can admire the lake stretching across the valley with the Esterel mountains in the distance.

👉 Local tip: The north side of the lake is usually quieter, especially early in the morning. It’s a great place to enjoy the scenery or go for a peaceful walk away from the busier beach areas.
