Here, distances feel different. What looks like a scenic stop on the map turns into a full-day or even multi-day experience once you’re inside the canyon.

The Gorges de l’Ardèche, stretching between Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, form a 32 km canyon carved by the river, with cliffs rising to 250 meters. The landscape is wide, rugged, and largely untouched, which is why the area has been protected as a nature reserve.

There are several ways to explore the gorges. The most immersive is by canoe, covering around 24 km through the canyon, either in one long day or over two days with a bivouac. Hiking trails also cross the reserve, offering views from above and along the river. For easier access, the panoramic road runs along the canyon with multiple viewpoints overlooking the cliffs and river below.

Because the area is protected, facilities inside the canyon are extremely limited, and wild camping is not allowed outside designated bivouac areas.

👉 Local Tip: If you don’t have time for canoeing, drive the scenic road and stop at several viewpoints. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light and fewer crowds.
