The Bourtzi Castle is one of Nafplio’s most recognizable landmarks, sitting on a tiny islet just off the harbor. Built by the Venetians in the 15th century to protect the city from naval attacks, this compact fortress has served many roles throughout its history—including as a defensive outpost, a residence for executioners, and even a luxury hotel in the mid‑20th century.

Today, visitors can take a short boat ride from Nafplio’s waterfront to explore the castle’s walls, towers, and inner courtyard while enjoying panoramic views of the Old Town and Palamidi Fortress. Its location makes it especially photogenic, whether approached by boat or captured from Nafplio’s promenade at sunset.

👉 Go in the late afternoon for softer light and fewer visitors. The return boat ride offers beautiful views of Nafplio’s waterfront bathed in golden hour glow.
