Église Saint-François d'Assise de Port Grimaud

Directions

From the outside, it looks like a small fortress watching over the canals. Step inside, and the atmosphere shifts to something calm, minimal, and unexpectedly modern.

Built in the heart of Port Grimaud, the lakeside village designed by architect François Spoerry, the Église Saint-François d’Assise was completed in the early 1970s as part of his vision to create a living, functioning community. Its architecture draws inspiration from fortified churches in Camargue, giving it a solid, almost defensive appearance that contrasts with the colorful waterfront surroundings.

The church is ecumenical, hosting both Catholic and Protestant services, which reflects the inclusive spirit of the area. Inside, the design is deliberately simple, allowing the focus to fall on the geometric stained glass by Victor Vasarely, representing the movement of the sun throughout the day.

One of the highlights is the climb to the rooftop terrace. A narrow spiral staircase leads to one of the best viewpoints in the area, with panoramic views over Port Grimaud’s canals, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, and the hills beyond.

👉 Local Tip: Pay the small fee to access the terrace and go early or just before sunset for softer light over the canals and fewer people on the stairs.
