Directions

The Parc National du Mercantour is one of the most spectacular natural areas in southern France, stretching across the Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Just a short drive from the Mediterranean, the landscape shifts dramatically into a rugged alpine wilderness of rocky peaks, glacial valleys, and high-altitude lakes.

Covering over 700 sq km, the park is known for its rich biodiversity. You may spot chamois, ibex, mouflon, and marmots, especially in the early morning. Above the mountains, birds of prey such as golden eagles and the rare lammergeier (bearded vulture) circle the cliffs.

The park offers endless ways to explore. You can hike scenic trails, cycle mountain roads, kayak in alpine lakes, or ski in winter. One of the most unique areas is the Vallée des Merveilles, where thousands of prehistoric rock carvings dating back over 4,000 years are scattered across the landscape.

Despite its size, parts of the Mercantour remain quiet and uncrowded, especially compared to more famous Alpine destinations. It’s a place where you can experience raw nature, dramatic scenery, and real solitude, all within reach of the Côte d’Azur.

👉 Local Tip: Start hikes early in the morning if you want to see wildlife. By midday, most animals retreat higher into the mountains and become much harder to spot.
