Directions

The Îles du Frioul sit just off the coast of Marseille, yet feel completely removed from the city. These rugged islands, Ratonneau and Pomègues, offer a mix of wild landscapes, clear water, and quiet beaches.

Reached by ferry from the Vieux Port, the islands reveal a different side of the Mediterranean. White limestone rocks, dry coastal vegetation, and deep blue water define the scenery. Beyond the small port area, you’ll find hidden coves, swimming spots, and some of the best snorkeling and diving near Marseille.

The islands are sparsely populated and easy to explore on foot. A short walk from the harbor leads to Plage de Saint-Estève, one of the most pleasant sandy beaches in the area. Further along, paths connect rocky viewpoints, quiet inlets, and wide sea views.

The Frioul islands are often combined with a visit to the nearby Château d’If, the famous fortress made popular by The Count of Monte Cristo. Together, they make one of the best day trips from Marseille.

Despite their proximity to the city, the Frioul islands remain raw, exposed, and largely undeveloped, offering a rare sense of space on this busy coastline.

👉 Local Tip: Most visitors stay near the port. Walk past it toward Pomègues or the far side of Ratonneau to find quieter coves and better swimming spots with fewer people.
