Floating gracefully on the edge of Lake Ashi, the Heiwa no Torii, also known as the Peace Torii , is one of Hakone’s most iconic sights. This striking red gate belongs to the Hakone Shrine, which sits tucked among towering cedar trees just a short stroll from the lake’s edge. The torii gate, standing partly in the water, was built to symbolize peace and resilience after World War II, and it’s become one of Japan’s most photogenic spots. Be warned though, you’ll almost always find a queue of visitors waiting their turn to snap that perfect shot with the mountains and lake behind (totally worth it).
