Stay Warm, Connected & Comfortable
🧭 Tap Water Is Mountain-Fresh: Bring a reusable bottle and save money. Tromsø's tap water is ice-cold and incredibly clean. Skip bottled water and stay hydrated for free—even on hikes.
📱Use Instagram to Check Café Hours: Information on Google Maps is often wrong. Opening hours change frequently, especially in winter. Most independent cafés and bakeries post up-to-date info on Instagram stories or highlights.
🚌Download the Troms Billett App: The easiest way to get around by bus. Use it to buy single or day tickets (cheaper than on board) and to access real-time schedules.
Bonus Tip: Bus 420 goes to Sommarøy—even in winter!
Airport Hack: Use the app for the airport express too.
🌌Northern Lights Are Free (Sometimes)
You don’t have to book a tour. On clear nights, walk 10–20 minutes out of the city to see them—try Prestvannet Lake, Telegrafbukta Beach, or the edge of Kvaløya.
Use the My Aurora Forecast app or Aurora.live
Be patient: activity often peaks between 9 PM–1 AM
🔋Bring a Power Bank: Cold temperatures = fast-draining batteries. Essential if you're using your phone for photos, maps, aurora forecasts, or tours.
🛒Save Big by Eating Like a Local
Eating out adds up. Stock up at REMA 1000, Extra, or Coop Prix. Look for cabins or Airbnbs with kitchens.
Try “dagens rett” (daily lunch specials) for budget meals out.
Grab a hotdog (“pølse”) at gas stations for ~£3.
🍷Alcohol Is Regulated: Only Vinmonopolet sells alcohol over 4.7%.
Hours: Closes 6PM on weekdays, 3PM Saturdays, closed Sundays.
Plan ahead if you’re hoping for a wine night after a northern lights tour!
🚐Book Tours That Include Pickup: Walking across town at -10°C in the dark isn’t fun. Most good tours include hotel pickup—choose them when possible.
Book early—reindeer and aurora tours sell out fast.
Check if they provide thermal suits/boots before packing bulky gear.
🌦️Weather Will Likely Change Your Plans: Storms, wind, or snowfall can cancel tours or block ferries. Keep at least one “buffer day” in your itinerary and avoid stacking activities too tightly.
🐢Slow Down—This is Arctic Time: Tromsø isn’t about rushing from sight to sight. Some of the best moments come quietly—spotting a reindeer, walking through snowfall at night, or sitting in a sauna with locals. Give yourself space to soak it all in.
Mobile Coverage & Map Tips
Coverage is generally solid, even on the islands—but it can drop in some valleys.
✅ Download offline maps in Google Maps before heading out.
✅ Bring printed tickets or screenshots of important bookings.
Public toilets are rare but clean. Most petrol stations, supermarkets, or cafés will let you use theirs—just buy a coffee.
➡️ Local Hack: Bring a mini thermos + foil blanket on long winter tours. Small comforts go a long way when you're freezing in the dark.
