The Arctic Cathedral, also known as Tromsdalen Church, is one of Tromsø’s most photographed landmarks. Designed by Jan Inge Hovig and completed in 1965, this striking modernist concrete and metal structure can seat up to 600 people. Its design, inspired by the twin-peaked island of Håja, makes it instantly recognizable across Tromsø.
We didn’t go inside as the entry fees were a bit pricey, but the exterior is absolutely worth seeing. Photograph it from Tromsø island with the mountains and fjord reflections behind it, or get closer on the esplanade in front—it looks particularly stunning when illuminated at night.
💰 Fees (to visit): 80 NOK for adults (~€6.91, £6, $8.20), free for children under 12.
💡 Tip: Visit at sunset or after dark to capture the cathedral beautifully lit against the water.
🧭 Nearby: Easily accessible from Tromsø city center, just across the Tromsdalen Bridge.
