Fairy Fort Dingle (Ringfort) - Kilvickadownig, Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland
Overview
Fairy Fort Dingle is located on the world-famous Slea Head Drive on the Dingle Peninsula, approximately 10 km west of Dingle town in the parish of Kilvickadownig. On site is an impressive and fairly well-preserved univallate rath - also known as a ringfort or lios - built on a gentle east-facing slope with excellent views in all directions. Fairy forts are circular fortified settlements built mostly during the Bronze Age up to around the year 1000, and this one is steeped in folklore: local legend holds that the forts were imbued with Druidic magic, and cutting the whitethorn fairy tree growing on the fort was said to bring death to whoever did it.
What You'll See
The circular interior is enclosed by an earthen bank and fosse, with traces of three or four huts and a souterrain. The bank rises at least 4.2 metres above the base of the fosse, and the causewayed entrance faces due east and is 3 metres wide. Climbing the earthen bank gives wide panoramic views across the Dingle Peninsula toward the coast. On site is also a pet farm with sheep, lambs, goats, horses, and donkeys - all well accustomed to visitors. Animal feed is provided as part of the entry experience.
Visitor Essentials
The site is open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm. Entry is €2.50 per person, which includes a portion of animal feed. No advance booking is required. Parking is limited and fills quickly during peak season, though turnover is generally fast. Most visitors spend between 20 and 45 minutes on site, making it an easy and affordable stop on the Slea Head Drive loop rather than a standalone half-day destination. The site does not have a formal ticket office or large visitor centre - it is privately owned and operated by a local family.
Tips
The site sits directly on the Slea Head Drive, so it slots naturally into the full loop from Dingle town - plan to do the complete drive rather than making a dedicated trip out and back. Arriving earlier in the day improves your chances of a parking spot and a quieter experience. The Dingle Peninsula is Ireland's westernmost point and weather can shift quickly - layers are a sensible idea regardless of the forecast. Other major sites nearby on the same loop include the Beehive Huts (Clochán), Coumeenoole Beach, and Slea Head itself, all within a few kilometres.
