Overview

Rossbeigh Strand, also known as Rossbeigh Beach and sometimes Rossbeigh White Strand, is a long sandy spit extending into Dingle Bay on the Ring of Kerry, about 2km south of the village of Glenbeigh. The beach is one of Ireland's most celebrated Blue Flag beaches, with length reports ranging from 7km to as long as 11km depending on tide and source, and it sits directly opposite Inch Beach on the Dingle Peninsula.

Rossbeigh is one of three sandspits that act as natural barriers protecting Dingle Bay from the full force of Atlantic swell, and the whole dune system forms part of the Castlemaine Harbour Special Area of Conservation, a Special Protection Area, and a proposed Natural Heritage Area.

What You'll See

The strand stretches for miles with golden sand, rolling dunes, and a dramatic backdrop of the Dingle Peninsula mountains across the bay. The south end of the beach is the main access point, with ample parking right at the water's edge, a well-equipped children's playground named Tír na nÓg, and public restrooms.

The protected dunes support diverse coastal flora and seabirds, including oystercatchers and curlews, particularly during migration seasons. Each August, the Glenbeigh Racing Festival brings horse and pony races directly onto the wet sand - a genuinely old-Ireland spectacle with food stalls, children's entertainment, and live crowds.

Visitor Essentials

The address is Rossbeigh Strand, Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry. The beach is free to access year-round and sits roughly 2km south of Glenbeigh village along the R561. Parking is free and extensive at the south end of the beach, close enough to the water that limited-mobility visitors can enjoy the view from the car.

Lifeguards are on duty during the summer bathing season. Facilities include toilets, outdoor showers, picnic areas, and the adjacent playground. A seasonal coffee shop operates on-site, with more food and pub options 2km away in Glenbeigh village.

Tips

Visit at low tide if you want to walk the full extent of the beach - the width of firm sand is most impressive then, and it's when horse-trekking operators typically run rides along the strand. The Atlantic water stays cold even in summer, so a wetsuit is worth it if you plan to spend any real time in the water surfing or swimming.

For a longer adventure, the Rossbeigh Hill Loop Walk is roughly 10km and climbs to the 274-meter summit of Rossbeigh Hill with panoramic views across Dingle Bay, the Dingle Peninsula, and neighboring beaches - parts of the route follow the Kerry Way long-distance trail.

Combine naturally with Kells Bay House and Gardens (subtropical plants and Ireland's longest rope bridge), Kerry Bog Village Museum, and Caragh Lake for a strong day in this quieter corner of the Ring of Kerry.
