Unravelling Shane - The Shane MacGowan Tour - Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland
Overview
Unravelling Shane is a guide to the places in Tipperary that inspired the life and lyrics of the late Pogues singer Shane MacGowan, created by his sister Siobhan and his widow Victoria Mary Clarke in conjunction with Tipperary County Council and Discover Lough Derg. The tour was developed in response to the worldwide influx of visitors to Nenagh, Lough Derg and surrounding areas following MacGowan's death in November 2023 at the age of 65. It covers 11 different locations around the shores of Lough Derg, celebrating all the places that were dear and special to Shane, from Nenagh's streets to the quiet boreens and lakeshore spots that fed directly into his songwriting.
What You'll See
The self-guided trail covers 15 points of interest across a total distance of 61 km, with five locations in the town of Nenagh and 10 spread across areas of particular significance to Shane. Highlights include two Shane MacGowan murals in Nenagh by artist Neil O'Dwyer, St. Mary's Church where his funeral was held in December 2023, Kennedy's pub in Puckaun where the Pogues played their only local concert on January 6th 1986, Cloughprior Cemetery where many of Shane's Lynch family relatives are buried - evoked in the song Sickbed of Cuchulainn, McKenna's pub in Borrisokane where Shane attended music sessions in his late teens, described as the birthplace of the Pogues, Kilbarron village where Shane's maternal family lived, the Cross of Finnoe referenced in his lyrics, and the Skehanagh shores of Lough Derg, immortalised in The Broad Majestic Shannon.
Visitor Essentials
The tour recommends beginning at Nenagh Tourist Office, where you can find up-to-date information and Shane memorabilia, and collect the trail brochure. A downloadable map is available via the official website. The self-guided trail is free to follow at your own pace by car, though guided coach tours run every Saturday with Arra Travel and can be booked via the official site. A physical copy of the brochure, which includes family photos, Shane's childhood sketches, and unseen notes, can be obtained by emailing nenaghtouristoffice@tipperarycoco.ie.
Tips
A car is essential for the full trail given the 61 km distance across rural North Tipperary, with many stops on narrow country roads. Build in time at the lakeshore stops, particularly Skehanagh and Dromineer, as these are the most scenically striking and carry the strongest lyrical connections. Philly Ryan's pub in Nenagh hosts a display of Shane MacGowan memorabilia and was his favourite local, making it the natural place to start or end the day. The tour also recommends the nearby lakeside villages of Terryglass and Garrykennedy as worthwhile add-ons for those spending a full day in the area.
