Overview

Sneem is a village on the Iveragh Peninsula along the Ring of Kerry, sitting on the estuary of the River Sneem where it widens into Kenmare Bay. The village is about 45 km west of Killarney and 22 km west of Kenmare along the N70 road.

The permanent population of 386 swells significantly in summer as tourists flock to its colourful stone cottages, bustling squares, and dramatic coastal backdrop. Sneem's layout gives the village its name - two squares, North and South, linked by a small bridge that, viewed from overhead, forms the knot between them.

What You'll See

A walking route just behind the village runs through the Sneem Sculpture Park. A serene walkway along the banks of the Sneem River leads to The Garden of the Senses, a small but atmospheric space with bird island and a picnic and barbecue area.

Visitor Essentials

A Fáilte Ireland-run information point in the North Square provides brochures, maps, and up-to-date details on attractions, events, and local services. The village itself is free to explore at any hour. Sneem has a modest selection of accommodations ranging from B&Bs to the nearby 4-star Parknasilla Resort and Sneem Hotel just outside the village.

Tips

Sneem serves as a hub for the Kerry Way long-distance walking trail, with several stages beginning or ending in the village - Stage 7 from Staigue River to Sneem is a moderate 11 km walk past Staigue Stone Fort, and Stage 8 from Sneem to Kenmare is a more challenging 30 km stretch with panoramic Caha Mountains views.

For most visitors on the Ring of Kerry, Sneem is best experienced at a slow pace rather than rushed through - a two or three hour stop allows time to walk both squares, cross the bridge to see the river falls, browse the shops, and grab lunch at a café or pub before continuing the drive.

Those with more time should consider using Sneem as an overnight base to tackle the Iveragh Peninsula coast and the nearby beaches at Derrynane at a calmer pace.
