Overview
The Skellig Experience Visitor Centre is located on Valentia Island just off the famous Ring of Kerry. It has been a landmark in Valentia for over 25 years and is dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Skellig Michael, bringing the magic and mystery of these famous rocks to visitors through graphics, film presentation, models, exhibition items, reconstructions, and the sound of seabirds and lighthouse keeper communications.
The Skellig Islands stand 12 km southwest of Valentia in the Atlantic Ocean and are world-famous - Skellig Michael for its well-preserved Early Christian monastic outpost, and Little Skellig for its 27,000 pairs of nesting gannets, the second-largest such colony in the world. The center is the natural starting point for understanding the Skelligs without committing to a full sea crossing.
What You'll See
Through re-creations and models, you can study the works and lives of the Skellig monks of the early Christian period, who established a community on the inhospitable offshore island that survived for some 600 years.
The 80-seat auditorium screens a 14-minute film that walks you through their world. The exhibition also covers the Skellig lighthouse and its service to mariners since the 1820s, the underwater life around the islands, and the seabirds that dominate Small Skellig. An onsite fully licensed restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating with views across to the village of Portmagee, alongside a gift shop and free parking.
Visitor Essentials
Plan to spend about two hours here if you want the full experience. Confirm current admission rates and opening hours directly via the official website before visiting, as both vary seasonally and have changed in recent years.

Tips
All boat tours are weather dependent - if the skipper deems sea conditions unfavourable, tours will be cancelled. Be mindful that upwards of 40% of Skellig Michael tours are cancelled due to poor weather or rough seas.
Booking landing tours weeks or months ahead is essential in summer; spaces are limited and demand significantly exceeds supply.
The center is right by the bridge connecting Valentia Island with the mainland, opposite Portmagee, just 11 km off the Ring of Kerry between Cahersiveen and Waterville. The visitor center itself is a worthwhile stop on its own for those who don't plan to take a boat - particularly on rough weather days when crossings are cancelled.
