Larkins Bar & Restaurant - Garrykennedy, County Tipperary, Ireland

Overview

Larkins is a traditional, family-run bar and restaurant situated in Garrykennedy on the south shore of Lough Derg, and is over 300 years old. Charmingly situated on the picturesque shores of Lough Derg, it is recognised by the Georgina Campbell Guide and has won Best Contemporary Irish Cuisine, Munster, at the Irish Restaurant Awards 2025. The setting alone draws visitors - a thatched cottage pub perched beside a working marina and the ruins of a 15th-century castle, with open views across the water.

What You'll See

The main dining room is a bright 35-seater restaurant with views of Lough Derg and the walled garden. The space is welcoming during the day and shifts to cosy, atmospheric lighting in the evening. The menu focuses on locally sourced produce, featuring traditional Irish dishes such as seafood chowder, turkey and ham, ruby ale battered fish and chips, and striploin steak. The pub and snug area carries the feel of an authentic Irish country bar with a well-stocked bar and speciality coffees.

Visitor Essentials

Larkins is closed Monday and Tuesday, and open from 12pm Wednesday through Sunday. Bank holiday weekends and seasonal changes may affect hours - confirm directly at 067-23232 or info@larkins.ie before visiting. Pricing is not listed publicly online, as menus are subject to seasonal changes - contact Larkins directly for up-to-date pricing. Booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment given how popular the restaurant is.

Tips

Traditional Irish music sessions run every Sunday from 7pm, with all musicians welcome. The harbour at Garrykennedy has mooring facilities, making Larkins a popular stop for those cruising Lough Derg by boat. The harbour also has picnic areas, barbecue facilities, and a playground, making it an easy stop to combine lunch with a walk along the shoreline. Nenagh is about 15 minutes by car, and Terryglass - another strong village for food and pubs - is roughly 20 minutes north along the lakeshore.
