Podumna Glamping Village - Portumna, County Galway, Ireland

Overview

Podumna Glamping Village is set in the heart of Portumna town in south-east County Galway, offering visitors a rare combination: the feel of a woodland setting with the convenience of a town-centre location. Guests stay in pods, huts, or cabins rather than tents - fully insulated, heated, and weatherproof. Portumna sits at the northern tip of Lough Derg, roughly 20 km north of Terryglass along the lake's shore, making it a natural base for exploring the wider Lough Derg lakelands. The site is run by Dick and Liz Ridge and their family, and is a Fáilte Ireland approved property consistently praised for its warmth and hospitality.

What You'll See

Accommodation options include eco pods - some designed for couples with a double bed and private decking, others sleeping up to four guests in single beds, ideal for families or friend groups. Each pod comes with an electric oil heater, three-pin and USB sockets, and its own deck and picnic bench. Three named family cabins are also available, each equipped with wall lighting, electric sockets, an electric oil heater, a raised decking area, and a picnic bench. On-site facilities include toilets, hot showers, a drying room, a fully equipped shared kitchen and dining room, an indoor dining area, and covered outdoor tables. Dick's Bike Hire operates directly from the grounds.

Visitor Essentials

Bed linen is provided in all pods, but guests are advised to bring their own towels or hire them on site for a small additional fee. Pricing is not listed publicly - confirm current rates by calling 083 434 3480 or emailing info@podumnavillage.ie. One-night stays are now accepted. Free Wi-Fi and free private parking are available on site, along with an electric vehicle charging station. Family and couple bookings are kept separate from group bookings, so families will share the site only with other families and couples.

Tips

Portumna Forest Park, 1,500 acres of Coillte woodland with trails along the River Shannon and Lough Derg shoreline, is a five-minute walk from the site. Portumna Castle and Gardens, the Irish Workhouse Centre, and Portumna Friary are all within a short walk of the village. Terryglass, with Paddy's Bar and the Derg Inn, is about 20 km south along the lake's eastern shore - well worth the short drive for an evening out. Canoeing, sailing, cycling, water skiing, windsurfing, horse riding, and clay pigeon shooting are all available in the Lough Derg lakelands nearby. Bikes can be hired directly on site from Dick's Bike Hire, making the Lough Derg greenway trail routes easily accessible without a car.
