This lake is one of my top summer retreats for swimming, camping, staying in cozy cottages, SUP, and canoeing.

Although it’s a bit remote, nestled in the mountains and set apart from the main Fuji lakes, getting here is well worth the effort. You can reach it by driving about an hour from Kawaguchiko or cycling along a scenic mountain road. If you visit, I highly recommend camping or renting a cottage, though day trips are also great—especially in summer when the lake is perfect for swimming.

I first discovered this spot through a unique sauna experience, where you can step out of a tent sauna and cool off in the lake’s refreshing waters. Interestingly, the lake has koi fish, adding a unique touch to the experience (fishing is prohibited). There’s also a hiking trail that starts here to a Mt. Fuji viewpoint.

About:

Lake Shibireko, nestled on Mount Hirogatake, offers a cool escape in the summer months with its crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming. Surrounded by lush greenery and a tranquil atmosphere, this hidden gem is a great spot to beat the heat and enjoy some water-based fun. Whether you're paddling around on swan-shaped pedal boats, casting a line for fishing, or just soaking up the sun on the shores, Lake Shibireko is a laid-back paradise for those seeking a refreshing dip in nature's own swimming pool.

Fyi, this lake is very popular among dog lovers because the Stand Up Paddle here allows puppies to ride them.
