Kerlingarfjöll is best visited during summer when the f roads are open, we did this straight from Reijkjavic. The f road condition is fine and there are no watercrossings. We stayed there at the campsite (book ahead online only) and the camp kitchen is absolutely beautiful. The hike itself is self-explanatory and everything looks like a movie.
