Tambara Lavender Park in Gunma is a great alternative if you don’t have time to travel all the way to Hokkaido for lavender fields. Located in Numata at around 1,300 meters above sea level, this park is the largest lavender field in the Kanto region and a perfect summer escape from Tokyo.
From early July to late August, the hills are covered in over 50,000 lavender plants, with different varieties blooming at different times, so you can enjoy the flowers for a longer period. The cooler mountain air also makes it a refreshing place to visit during the hot summer months.
You can reach the park by train and bus, but renting a car is more convenient, especially if you want to explore more of Gunma. While visiting, you can try unique lavender-themed treats like lavender soft cream or even lavender ramen, and the souvenir shop has many interesting items such as lavender cider, lip balm, and even mosquito repellent.
It’s a perfect place to relax in nature, and you can combine it with other spots in Gunma like Kusatsu Onsen or Takaragawa Onsen for a memorable weekend trip.
