The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan is an impressive monument that presides over Salah al-Din Square in the historic district of Cairo, Egypt. It was built between 1356 to 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan. Its construction faced various challenges and obstacles such as the Black Plague and excessive cost, but despite these difficulties, it stands tall today and continues to amaze tourists with its massiveness, innovative architecture and intricate decoration. Furthermore, due to its location near the Citadel of Cairo, the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan has served many functions throughout its history, including a fortified position in times of strife and even a refuge for Tumanbay, the very last Mamluk sultan!
