This popular north shore beach is famous for two things - surfers and turtles.

About the surfers…Ho’okipa is Maui’s most popular “big wave” surfing beach and during the winter you’ll get quite the show. There’s a lookout on the bluff when you first pull in (this is the best place to park) that has the best views.

About the turtles…the east end of the beach (against the cliff) is a resting area for the Hawaiian green sea turtles.

The turtles show up en masse in the afternoons, but there are usually a few around in the mornings too. The turtles are very protected here and volunteers enforce a boundary, but you can see them really well from the wall up top (by the picnic tables).
