The Galata Tower, located in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district, is a town landmark that dates back to 1348 and stands at a towering height of 62.59 metres (205 feet). Known initially as the Christea Turris (Tower of Christ), the nine-story tower was built by Genoese visitors of Constantinople and has seen many renovations and uses over the centuries, from a watchtower for fires to a prison in the Ottoman era up until its most recent use as a museum and exhibition space. Today, the ancient tower is renowned for its incredible panoramic views of the city and remains an icon of historical grandeur and beauty.
