The monumental church, built between 1790 and 1825 on the same area where two other churches had been built in the past – the first built in 1195 and the second in the 16th century – named after the same saint, patron saint of the city.

The facade is in neoclassical style and on the tympanum you can admire a relief depiction of St. George with the dragon in the centre, while at the two lower corners there are statues of St. Peter and St. Paul. At the four corners of the first order there are instead four statues of female figures. The bell tower is 47 meters high while the dome, once covered with terracotta tiles, is 35 meters high.

The interior has a Greek cross plan, has a Baroque and Renaissance style and houses, among other works, a marble altar from 1764, a wooden choir from one of the previous churches built on this site and works by the Neapolitan painter Federico Maldarelli .
