Crossing Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II you will find yourself in Piazza della Scala, which houses the famous Teatro Alla Scala. This building was inaugurated in 1778 at the behest of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and owes its name to the Church of Santa Maria alla Scala, which was demolished to make way for the theatre.
