The Lake Alta Track is a short yet rewarding alpine hike located in the Remarkables mountain range, just outside Queenstown. This 3.5 km return trail offers hikers stunning views of a glacial lake nestled amidst rugged peaks. It's an ideal choice for those seeking a moderate hike with impressive scenery. Remember, entry to the Remarkables parking is $15, but the hike is free of course!

  • Duration: 1.5 to 2.5 hours

šŸš— Access & Parking

To reach the trailhead, drive from Queenstown to the Remarkables Ski Field. The journey takes approximately 30–45 minutes, depending on road conditions. Please note that there is a road toll of NZD $15 during the summer months to access the ski field.Ā

Parking is available at the ski field base. From the car park, the trailhead is easily accessible. Facilities are limited, so it's advisable to bring essentials such as water, snacks, and sunscreen.Ā

🧭 Tips for Hikers

  • Weather: Conditions can change rapidly in alpine environments. Even in summer, temperatures can be cool, and winds can be strong. Dress in layers and bring a windproof jacket.

  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are recommended, as the trail can be rocky and uneven.

  • Swimming: The lake's waters are cold year round. While some visitors take a quick dip, it's advisable to be cautious.

  • Extended Hike: For those seeking a longer adventure, consider the optional Shadow Basin Circuit, which adds about 30 minutes to the hike and offers additional scenic views.
