Point Kean is one of Kaikoura’s most iconic wildlife spots, famous for its resident New Zealand fur seals lounging on the rocks below. From the viewpoint, you get amazing panoramic views of the coastline, mountains, and the vibrant seal colony.

Quick Tips:

  • Best time: Early morning or late afternoon for softer light and active seals.

  • Safety: Stay on marked paths and viewing platforms; seals are wild and can be aggressive if approached.

  • Binoculars: Bring them for a closer look at pups and adult seals.

  • Photography: A telephoto lens helps capture wildlife without disturbing them.

  • Footwear: The track can be uneven or slippery, so wear sturdy shoes.
