The Southland region is best known for the iconic Milford Sound, an absolutely breathtaking place that feels almost unreal when you see it in person. It's no surprise that it's been featured in films like The Lord of the Rings, X-Men, and many others. One of the top must do experiences here is taking a cruise through the fiord. The most popular operators include Southern Discoveries, Real NZ, and Pure Milford. These offer fantastic experiences, but if you’re after something a bit more intimate and away from the crowds, there are also smaller cruise options available. This is hands down a MUST do in NZ! Appreciate the drive through Fiordland.
Getting There
Drive or bus? The road in (Milford Road) is one of the most scenic in New Zealand, but it’s long (about 4 hours one way from Queenstown, 2 hours from Te Anau). Consider staying in Te Anau to break it up.
Start early: The road can get busy later in the day, especially with tour buses. Early morning drives mean fewer crowds and better chance of calm weather.
Fuel up: There are no petrol stations in Milford Sound. Last stop is in Te Anau.
Cruise & Activities
Boat cruise: Classic way to experience Milford. Smaller boats feel less crowded and get closer to waterfalls.
Kayaking: A more intimate way to explore - you’re right on the water with the cliffs towering above you.
Scenic flight: If budget allows, consider a return flight from Queenstown or Te Anau one way (drive in, fly out). Gives a whole new perspective.
Hiking: The Milford Track is world-famous (needs booking in advance), but you can also do short walks like the Foreshore Walk near the carpark or the Key Summit Track along the way.
Weather & Timing
Rain is good! Milford is one of the wettest places in the world - rain creates hundreds of temporary waterfalls. Don’t be discouraged by bad weather; it can actually be more dramatic.
Sandflies: They’re brutal near the water. Bring repellent, cover up, or keep moving.
Best light: Morning and late afternoon give you softer light for photos. Midday can be harsh with glare on the water.
What to Bring
Rain jacket (always, even if it looks clear).
Layers - it can be chilly on the boat.
Snacks & water - limited (and expensive) food options at Milford Sound itself.
Wide lens for photos (the cliffs are massive).
