Kaikōura always feels like a showstopper, rugged mountains rising straight from the sea, calmed only by a coastline that hums with life .

Why the hype?

  • Whale watching all year: It’s one of the few places globally where sperm whales live year round just offshore, and in winter you might spot humpbacks, orca, even blue whales

  • Dolphins & seals: Pods of playful dusky or Hector’s dolphins show up daily, and the seal colonies along the peninsula are always buzzing, especially around Point Kean and Ohau Point

  • Stunning walks: The Kaikōura Peninsula walkway mixes shoreline views, mountain backdrops, and wildlife, a photographer’s dream .

  • Fresh crayfish & coastal vibes: “Kaikōura” literally means “eat crayfish”, the local seafood scene is as good as the views

  • 📌 Quick Tips for Kaikōura

  • 🐋 Book whale & dolphin tours early – especially in summer or school holidays.

  • 🥾 Walk the Kaikōura Peninsula Track – allow 2–3 hours for the full loop, or shorter sections for sunset.

  • 📸 Sunrise at South Bay and sunset from the lookout near Point Kean are unreal for photos.

  • 🧥 Pack layers – mornings can be crisp even in summer, and coastal wind picks up in the afternoon.

  • 🚗 A car is handy – distances are short, but beaches, bays and trailheads are spread out.

  • 🦭 Stay 10 metres from seals – especially during pupping season (Nov–Jan).

  • 🦞 Try local crayfish – Nin’s Bin and Kaikōura Seafood BBQ are crowd faves.

  • 🧴 Bring sunscreen & water – lots of tracks are exposed to the sun.

  • 🐬 Dolphin swimming tours usually run early in the morning – best light and calmer seas.

  • Accommodation fills fast in peak months (Dec–Feb) – book ahead, especially for waterfront spots.
