Perched on the West Coast of the South Island, Hokitika is a charming coastal town known for its rugged beaches, vibrant arts scene, and rich history from the gold rush era. It’s famous for greenstone (pounamu) carving, local artisan markets, and the stunning Hokitika Gorge with its turquoise waters. The town is also a great base for exploring nearby rainforests, glaciers, and the wild West Coast coastline.

Quick Tips:

  • 💎 Visit local jade/carving shops to see and buy authentic pounamu.

  • 🌊 Take a walk along Hokitika Beach and keep an eye out for driftwood sculptures.

  • 🏞️ Don’t miss Hokitika Gorge, a short walk rewards you with striking blue waters.

  • 🗓 The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival in March is a unique local experience.
